Resumen

This paper focuses on the latest developments in the European eco-innovation scheme for reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles. In order to meet manufacturers? specific CO2 emissions targets, Regulation (EC) No. 443/2009 and Regulation (EU) No. 520/2011 provide the opportunity for automotive manufacturers to take into account CO2 savings from innovative technologies, ?eco-innovations?, which cannot demonstrate their CO2-reducing effects under the test procedure used for vehicle type approval. The process of approval of applications for eco-innovations is illustrated and some relevant examples are given. In order to simplify the process a key aspect is identified in the availability of average data that could be used for simplified calculations of the CO2 savings of eco-innovative technologies. To address this need, the paper analyses the current dataset and presents new average values for the ambient temperature for driving vehicles. The methodology to evaluate these new values is presented and discussed. Average data that might be needed in the near future are also identified.
