Diversity Management and Organizational Performance: Evidence from Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises

     

Resumen

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been acclaimed to be the engines for sustainable economic development. The success of these enterprises in the globalized and competitive environment depends on effective management. Researchers have recognized diversity management of heterogeneity in culture, functions, knowledge, and skills as ingredients for organizational performance. Diversity management is an important aspect of contemporary organizational practices. This study empirically explored the relationship between diversity management and organizational performance in Nigerian small and medium enterprises. A survey of registered SMEs in Lagos State was undertaken by means of self-administered questionnaires. The study generated a 92% response rate. Responses from the survey were statistically analyzed using descriptive and Pearson product moment correlation. The results of the study reveal the adoption of diversity management in Nigerian SMEs and a significant relationship between diversity management and organizational performance. The implication of the study is the need for Nigerian SMEs to adopt diversity management at micro and macro levels for superior outcomes.Keywords: Diversity Management, Organizational Performance, Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises.
